Group Offerings
Children at a tableAll groups are held at our Maplewood location, led by licensed occupational therapists.

Group fees are due in full to hold a space, and are non-refundable. If Children's Theraplay must cancel a group due to lack of participation, full refunds will be issued.

Group participants must:
  • be able to separate from parent/caregiver
  • be able to follow simple directions
  • be able to complete tasks with minimal one-on-one assistance

Social Skills Group
In this group, your child will practice social skills in a safe environment, with the benefit of adult-structured interaction. This group works on a variety of skills based on participant needs, which may include sharing, turn-taking, personal boundaries, following directions, social cues, transitions, frustration tolerance, conversations, and making and keeping friends.

Food Explorers:
S.O.S. Feeding Group
The Sequential Oral Sensory Approach to Feeding, developed by Dr. Kay Toomey, PhD, incorporates a structured, play-based, developmental progression, to encourage playful interaction with food, increased variety and balance to food repertoire, and more successful, less stressful mealtimes for you and your child. A parent education group meets separately at the same time, to increase carryover to home.

Sensory Adventures Group
Your child will explore sensory systems - visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, gustatory, proprioceptive, and vestibular - through play-based interaction. Each session will include kid-friendly information about a specific sensory system, as well as different exploratory activities, and parent education. If your child is somewhat sensitive to sensory stimuli, or has poor awareness/low registration, they may benefit from this group.

Way to Play! Fine Motor Group
Utilize the benefit of social interaction and a group goal to foster interest in and increase practice opportunities for fine motor skill development. In addition to theme-related activities, your child will make materials (props, signs, backdrop mural, etc.) to accompany a book-reading, which they perform for families at the last session.

Way to Move! Gross Motor Group
This group will help your child increase strength, balance, bilateral coordination, and hand-eye coordination while engaged in a variety of different teamwork and partner play activities. Your child will participate in positive experiences in a group environment, which will help them to improve self-concept, and strengthen bonds with peers. Each week will feature a different theme (e.g. circus, camping).

Check with your child's school about what curriculum (Zaner-Bloser, etc.) your child uses.

Handwriting Without Tears
Pre-Writing Group
Using the Handwriting Without Tears® Pre-K Readiness materials, this group systematically introduces concepts and skills needed for your child's success with writing. A developmental sequence is used to improve color and shape recognition, grasp of writing utensil, pre-strokes, and letter and number recognition. Related materials build body awareness, hand strength, position concepts, and pre-drawing skills.

Getting It Write
Printing and Cursive Groups
Enable your child to practice and refine handwriting skills with the benefit of peer motivation, using the Getting It Write curriculum. Both groups focus on body awareness, motor planning, proprioception, kinesthesia, tactile discrimination, bilateral coordination, memory, visual perception, ocular control, fine motor coordination, intrinsic hand strengthening, and relaxation techniques.
